Hulley & Kirkwood were employed by the University of Strathclyde to be part of the design team for their new £60M Teaching and Learning hub.

The project is located within the heart of the university campus adjacent to the Rottenrow Gardens, at the junction of North Portland Street and Richmond Street.

The strip out and refurbishment of the Grade B listed architecture building and the Colville Building were the foundations of the project with a new build hub overlooking the Rottenrow Gardens bringing the existing structures together as one unique 20,000m² collective space. As the biggest single investment project to date on campus the facility will become a beacon for teaching and learning excellence at Strathclyde University.

Sustainability and energy efficiency were an integral part of the client brief, with a target to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.

The University of Strathclyde’s aspirations were for a low energy building and the design of the M&E services therefore targeted low carbon emission and energy reductions beyond the minimum requirements wherever practicable.

These measures included:-

• An enhanced level of automatic lighting controls where applicable.

• Use of high efficiency LED lighting throughout.

• Using ventilation plant with low specific fan powers (SFPs) and high efficiency heat recovery.

• Using comprehensive HVAC controls.

• Using air cooled chiller plant with heat recovery and transfer to serve the domestic hot water.

These actions are assisted by connection to the new University of Strathclyde’s district energy network, which will bring considerable benefits by reducing the energy demands of the university and will contribute to the carbon reduction across the whole campus.

H&K worked with the BRE and the client to develop a bespoke BREEAM assessment for the refurbishment and extension of existing buildings on the John Anderson Campus. 

The bespoke assessment combined elements of BREEAM New Construction and BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit-Out. The assessment was tailored to take account of the listed nature of the 'Architecture Building' a Grade B listed building, the major refurbishment of the Colville Building and the specification of a new build link atrium joining the two buildings. 

The assessment is currently undergoing post construction review and is expected to achieve  final 'Very Good' rating and certification this year.
