We were employed by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue (SFR) to carry out the overall M&E design for their new £31M training centre in Cambuslang on the outskirts of Glasgow. As part of the project, SFR were providing state of the art training facilities including a 150 seat auditorium, 30 lecture rooms, mock command centre, incident control rooms & video conferencing facilities, as well as practical training zones.

All of the areas incorporated and maintain a heavy reliance on AV facilities for the training function of the facility to be achieved. The auditorium incorporates a rear projection facility, control / mixing room, side projection screens, CCTV cameras for lecture transmission to side projection screens or remote transmission to lecture rooms or off site, a fully integrated lighting control system and various control points. Incident control rooms provide the lecturers with the opportunity to create various incident scenarios through the AV facilities for the trainees and allows their reactions to be monitored, recorded and evaluated in a classroom scenario. Within practical training zones CCTV systems monitor and record the fire crew arrival and reaction to a live fire incident at both the main academic building and also the local control pods within the fire training ground. These images can then be reviewed locally with the trainees in the pods or back in a classroom scenario.

We were responsible for the management and interface with the client’s requirements and the AV installers to ensure that the system and equipment specified was capable of fulfilling the functionality. We further interfaced with the main contractor to ensure our design provided the necessary cabling, data network capability, containment, builders work supports and programme support to deliver the project on time and budget.

The credentials of the design and building were further enhanced in achieving an ‘Excellent’ award under BREEAM Education scheme.
