The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) has an established reputation as a centre of excellence in the treatment and delivery of orthopaedic care. To fulfil its vision to become “the specialist orthopaedic hospital of choice, the Trust has embarked on an ambitious redevelopment project that provides modern, spacious accommodation to enable the Trust to provide exceptional care, now and into the future".

The new hospital is the first stage in the Trust’s redevelopment of the site, providing a new main entrance for the hospital and the re-provision of inpatient accommodation including 64 adult acute beds and a 27 bed children’s and young person’s ward. The building incorporates a main entrance atria extending the full height of the building which serves as the public face to the developed site facilities.

The M&E services design incorporates energy saving technologies throughout which have helped contribute to the delivery of BREEAM Healthcare Excellent standard including; 

• LED lighting with automated control.

• Mixed mode ventilation strategies serving bedrooms.

• Natural stack assisted ventilated atrium.

• Optimised solar control glazing.

• Gas fired combined heat and power. 

• Facility to connect to future district heating network.

Patient comfort is ensured with an environmental control maintained by active chilled / heating beams with localised patient control. Environmental treatment of this space includes a sustainable design natural stack ventilation system, automatically controlled via opening high and low level ventilators to maintain comfort conditions.

The project was designed in accordance with BIM Level 2 protocols, in line with public procurement policy. The BIM facilitates construction of the building within a virtual environment allowing coordination and clash detection to be fully resolved prior to construction on site.
