Gregg Davidson
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Joining the Glasgow Office in 2016 as Graduate in 2016 after achieving a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde. I have always had an interest in design, building physics and the built environment. and so, I was naturally drawn to a career in Building Services. On a personal level, I have a strong desire to work in a role where I feel I can make a tangible difference in addressing the Climate Emergency.
I enjoy the collaborative and multi-disciplinary aspects of the job, working alongside other professional engineers, architects, project managers to deliver creative and innovative servicing solutions to often complex builds. The diverse range and scale of projects is also something that I appreciate about working at H&K, as well as working on both client and contractor side roles. One of my most notable projects was being seconded to RAF Marham for a year to assist on the delivery of the infrastructure for the UK's first operational F-35 squadron.
In 2020 I transferred to the Bristol office and have been promoted to a Senior Engineer, having taken the lead role in delivering a number of healthcare projects at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, as well as a COVID testing facility and over 40 boiler rooms replacements on behalf of the Royal Mail Group. We have had a number of new Engineers join us in this time, and I now have the responsibility of training the Mechanical Graduates and appraising their design work, as well as improving the REVIT literacy of the M&E teams.
Alexis Watson
Principal Electrical Engineer
I joined the Glasgow office in 2013 as a Design Engineer after obtaining my chartership and looking for a new challenge. I enjoy working at H&K due to the opportunity to work in a broad range of projects in many different sectors and also working on some of the largest projects in Glasgow. It is exciting to see how as a company we can bring in change to our own city and it confirmed my desire for a company which has such a strong local client base. We never stop learning and I’ve continued to add new skills while working on some challenging but ultimately rewarding projects. As a working parent Hulleys has given me the opportunity to have a work life balance I need while allowing me to progress my career and achieve my goals.
Sihao Lu
Senior Sustainability Engineer
Joining the Manchester Office in 2016 as a Graduate Engineer, I was fortunate to have worked on a varied and wide-ranging portfolio of projects. During my time in Manchester I developed a particular interest in sustainability. I progressed to Design Engineer with the support of Senior Engineers in the office and the company’s structured graduate training programme and enjoyed the social office atmosphere.
Since joining the Edinburgh Office in 2022, I have been promoted to Senior Sustainability Engineer. I am working towards my chartership and have received great support and guidance from the senior staff on my career journey. I am also focusing on achieving professional qualifications such as LCEA and OCDEA. I am grateful that H&K has given me the confidence to manage my own projects and the freedom to develop my technical, management and leadership skills.
Alessandro Bosch
Design Engineer
When I joined in 2020 I had very little exposure to the Building Services industry and no experience working as an Engineer. Everyone was extremely welcoming and working in a team supported by Senior Engineers, I was able to take on some responsibility and become increasingly independent, when making design decisions and coming up with innovative solutions to challenges that may arise during various stages of a project.
I have had the opportunity so far to work on a variety of projects from schools, offices to hospitals and leisure centres. The extensive portfolio of projects the company works on is one of the things I enjoy the most, I have used IES for design and compliance purposes to assist with design calculations and production of EPCs. I have developed a strong relationship with all my colleagues and look forward to developing further as an Engineer alongside them.
Eleni Kalyva
Senior Sustainability Engineer
Starting work with Hulley & Kirkwood as a Graduate Engineer in 2013, I received continuous training support and opportunities which enabled me to acquire qualifications such as CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor, CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant, BREEAM UK New Construction Assessor, Certified Passive House Designer, WELL AP and CDM Principal Designer. These coupled with being surrounded by experienced engineers and exposed to leading projects from a vast range of building sizes and types gave me the required skills and confidence to become a rounded Senior Sustainability Engineer. At Hulley & Kirkwood I feel a valued member of a team where I can constantly keep on advancing my career to the next level, while being in a relaxed and positive environment which promotes ‘people oriented’ culture.
Francisco Salle
Graduate Engineer
Having dabbled in both Robotics and Electrical Engineering during my degree, I was not quite sure what my next steps would be upon graduating. H&K was my first look into the world of Building Services, I joined the Birmingham team in 2022, having an Electrical background, I have been able to learn about LV electrical systems alongside other mechanical systems such as Domestic Services and HVAC.
I have been able to work on a diverse portfolio of projects. Our projects range from small health centres and residential refurbishment to projects as big as the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I have had the opportunity to interact with clients on a regular basis which has helped me improve my soft skills alongside my technical skills. I hope to keep developing my skills and experience working on exciting projects, while working towards Chartered status.
Steven McKinlay
Graduate Engineer
Since joining the Glasgow Team in 2021, my skill set within the world of building services engineering has broadened extensively. I have gained more experience working in the industry, granting me more independence when working on projects. This in turn allows me to produce my own designs for projects from start to finish, with the necessary help from my colleagues of course. Such projects can range anywhere from hospitals, offices, fire stations, schools etc, all with their own individual challenges.
Aside from the practical side of the industry, I have also furthered my abilities through the use of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) seminars, which can take place either online or in-person. I truly believe attending these presentations has widened my understanding of a multitude of aspects in engineering from a more theoretical viewpoint. Sustaining a healthy balance between the practical and theoretical sides of the profession will hopefully allow me to continue to develop as an engineer, and above all else, as a person.
Jenna Staley
Senior Electrical Engineer
I joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 2018 straight out of University with limited exposure to M&E Building Services. I settled in quickly with a team that was encouraging, welcoming and social. From the start of my career I have been able to undertake rewarding projects from concept to construction in a large variety of sectors that have contributed towards my Chartership goal.
As a Senior Engineer, I have developed my skills, to take on greater responsibilities including being the sole individual in client meetings, attending site to discuss with contractors solutions to build issues and training new staff on fundamentals.
The Hulley & Kirkwood team have been supportive throughout my journey and provided their expertise, guidance and support when I have asked.
In the 5 years I have worked with Hulley & Kirkwood I have worked on hotels, hospitals, schools, social housing, offices and residential building which have afforded me the opportunity to learn new software, soft skills and develop my technical understanding of complex systems.
Everyone in Hulley & Kirkwood including people from other offices have always been welcoming and I look forward to continuing my journey within the company.
Hardy Hamilton
Graduate Engineer
I joined the Company in 2022 on the back of a post-graduation role as a Design Engineer focussed on Fire Engineering. With a BEng in Civil & Structural Engineering from the University of Aberdeen and an MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, it was always my ambition to have a career working in the built environment.
At Hulleys, I quickly settled in as part of a friendly team of Mechanical Engineers working collaboratively with other Mechanical and Electrical Engineers throughout the office here in Glasgow. In my time with Hulley & Kirkwood, I have contributed to projects in the residential, education and healthcare sectors, learning much about the unique challenges associated with each.
I’ve also had the opportunity to conduct on-site surveys and attend regular CPDs alongside my colleagues. Additionally, with the recent introduction of a formal graduate training programme, I am grateful to benefit from a structured training pathway to complement my increasing responsibility in projects.
